Fruit and vegetable consumption extends life

British researchers say that eating 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day increases the life span.

Imperial College researchers in London say that consuming 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day will prevent 7.8 million premature deaths per year.

The researchers analyzed the data obtained in 95 separate studies that examined the eating habits of some 2 million people.

Researchers point out that certain fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, he said, leading to a noticeable difference in consumption even in small quantities.

Consumption of 200 grams of fruit and vegetables a day leads to a 13 percent reduction in cardiovascular risk, a 4 percent reduction in cancer risk, and a 15 percent decrease in early risk of death.

When fruit and vegetable consumption reaches 800 grams per day, cardiovascular disease risk decreases by 28 percent, cancer risk by 13 percent and early death risk by 31 percent.

The portion indicated in the study is equivalent to 80 grams. This is equivalent to a small banana, pear, or full three spoonful of spinach or peas.
